Navigating the Bible

Navigating the Bible February 9 through March 23, for grades 3, 4, and 5 This seven-week series will help the kids get to know the Bible better and develop their skills in Bible use.  The kids will learn about its organization, how the Bible came to be, examine the different kinds of literature and why it’s important to the story, discover how the message moved from one man to a nation to the world, how to use all the pieces found in the Bible and introduce them to resources outside the Bible that can help them understand scripture better.  On March 23, we will have a Bible presentation for all those in grades 3 - 5.

 Lenten Monday Study

Lenten Monday Study

Lenten Sermon Series and Study: The Third Day: Living the Resurrection by Tom Berlin with Mark A. Miller.  The 40 days leading up to Easter are, traditionally, a time to prepare our hearts and lives for the resurrection as we focus on the difficulty and sacrifice involved in following Jesus.  Yet, we often spend little time contemplating how Jesus’ resurrection transformed the lives of his first followers and brings the joy of new life for us all.  That 3rd Day changed everything!  Join us during the season of Lent, as we consider the impact of the Resurrection, “the beginning of all of our stories and the day when hope broke through so many forms of darkness that attempt to cloak our lives.”  Studies will be on Monday evenings (March 3-April 7) at 7 pm on Zoom and on Wednesday mornings (March 5-April 9) at 10 am in MPR. Books are available in the church office for $16.00, or you can purchase the book or eBook online at Amazon.  You can sign up using the connection card or click here.

TP Challenge! During the Lenten beginning Wednesday, March 5, we will have a toilet paper collection competition between worship services. The 8:00 and 11:00 am services will be competing with the 9:30 am service to see who can bring in more rolls of toilet paper. Toilet paper is always needed at our partner pantries because individuals cannot use money from government assistance programs to purchase it. We will be donating the rolls to GRIN. Please bring your donations to the Welcome area and place them in the box labeled with your regular service time! The deadline to participate is Sunday, April 13.

Monthly movie:  You are invited to join the monthly movie group on Monday, March 3, for the film "The Unbreakable Boy."  Some of life's hardest challenges come from our own families.  This film (based on a true story) centers on a young boy with a genetic bone disease and autism.  Since he lacks the ability to read social cues there is a lot of humor in how he interacts with those around him.  The issues he faces fall especially hard on his father which puts strains on the marriage.  The film is at Stoneridge Cinemark and we will watch the first showing on Monday.  Please check online over the weekend for showtimes.  Following the movie we will walk to a local spot for lunch and conversation.  If you have questions contact Bill Bartter (wbartter@att.net).

Midwest Mission Orientation Meeting

Midwest Mission trip, August 24 - 30, 2025. There will be an orientation meeting for a mission trip to the Midwest Mission warehouse in Springfield, IL on Sunday, January 26 at 1:00 pm. Midwest Mission sends tangible resources to those in need to make an intangible difference in their lives through hope and empowerment. Tangible gifts of soap, detergent, gloves, deodorant, sleeping mats, plastic garbage bags, plus so much more are turned into gifts of hope for people in the United States and across the world.  Midwest Mission refurbishes bicycles, cleans old sewing machines, creates desks from recycled wooded bleachers, prepares cleaning buckets, hygiene kits, birthing kits, and more! Volunteers process, revitalize, and assemble all the donations, mostly from North Central Jurisdiction (Midwest states) individuals and individual churches. There is work for everyone of every skill level and seated work is available for those who need it. If you have wanted to go on a trip, but are not up for the construction, this is a fantastic way to offer hope to those who are in need during crises and those lacking simple resources that could improve their circumstances. Pastor Lauren will be leading a group to Springfield, IL, August 24 – 30, 2025.

January Monthly Movie

January 2025 - "A Complete Unknown"
This movie is about Bob Dylan, one of the most iconic singer songwriters from the 1960s.  A Nobel Prize willing writer in fact.  Hardly "unknown."

Well, that's something we can talk about after we see the movie.  The movie is currently at Stoneridge Cinemark, with show times as early as 9 AM.  We will watch the first show after 10 AM on Monday, Jan 6.  Please check online over the weekend for show times.  Following the movie we will walk to a local spot for food and conversation.

You don't have to love Dylan's music to enjoy this movie.  It captures the music scene and cultural tumult of the early 1960s.  There are appearances by folks like Woody Guthrie, Joan Baez, Johnny Cash, and Pete Seeger.

Here are some words of caution from the Common Sense Media web site (although they recommend the movie for those 15 and older):  Parents need to know that A Complete Unknown is a biopic about iconic singer-songwriter Bob Dylan (Timothée Chalamet) that's specifically focused on the 1965 Newport Folk Festival, an event that changed his career trajectory. Expect strong language, including "f--k," "s--t," "a--hole," "goddamn," "Jesus," "Christ," and "damn," plus a middle-finger gesture. Characters drink and smoke cigarettes frequently (not surprising, given the 1960s setting), and characters sometimes appear drunk.

The Roger Ebert web site gives a very glowing review.  You can check it out with the link below.

Confirmation is the time when students in grades 7-12 can learn more about our faith, the Bible, and what it means to be a part of the church. We review our baptismal vows and students will become members of the church when they complete the confirmation class. Classes will begin the first week of January and go through Confirmation Sunday on April 27. Register your student here or email Jason.sheldon@stonybrook.church for more information.
